Also, simply turning won't protect you from backstabs. Avoiding them is easy though. All you have to do is unlock, and walk away. It is still possible to backstab if you do this, but it is very difficult. It requires an angled backstab, and this is what I was referring to earlier when I mentioned angles are sometimes necessary.

start practicing on easier to BS enemies. try the aldrich faithful in anor londo for pivots, and the four pronged plow hollows in undead settlement for strafe stabs. roll backstabs are not optimal in pve, and even pivots are more of a pvp thing, although they do work well on some enemies. most of your backstabs in pve will be strafe stabs. start on a four pronged plow hollow. lock on, sprint

The first part of the attack window is grazing your parry tool, costing you health and stamina, but on the follow through of the attack, you're still within range of being hit but you're in the right area for a parry, so the double back allowing you to riposte them. Can't help you with backstabs though, sounds like you just gotta get there
The snap is not solely a function of latency, its part of how all backstabs work in ds3. Right but the snap wouldn’t be a necessary mechanic if there was zero latency. The snap makes backstabs easier to pull off, no question. That’s why people were struggle bussing with backstabs in Elden ring.

I think holding RB is wrong, have you tried just clicking it ? Holding R1 is 100% wrong but it shouldn't prevent you from getting the backstab. To add on to what Almaz said, lots of enemies stand at a bit of an angle, and that can make it hard to tell what the back of them really is.

Sure but in DS1 backstab was such a cheesey and powerful method of crowd control it they needed to do something. You'd run into 3 mobs and just chain backstab them to death. The community was pretty happy with the idea of no invuln frames during the animation. Obviously they changed their minds, but it's harder to backstab now, so it works out. Dark Souls 3 doesn't need even more ways of punishing aggression, and no game wants mechanics that sometimes just flat out don't work when properly executed. If backstabs depended more heavily on the perspective of the recipient, that'd be one more reason to just hang back and play passive. .
