In 1890, Oscar Wilde finished the first version of his only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray.The book’s titular character is a young, naïve beauty who becomes terrified of losing his looks; for reasons never fully explained, he is able to remain young and pretty while his portrait grows old and ugly, mirroring his rapid moral decay. No one with a shred of love for human love and kindness could ever possibly love Lord Henry. I personally love the writing style of A Picture of Dorian Grey. And in my opinion, the point of the novel (if novels have points) is to see that Lord Henry is the villian if the whole thing.
It's got a very early seventies look right from the outset with Helmut Berger in the title role - blonde, good looking, living a debauched lifestyle. When he is painted by "Basil" (Richard Todd) - a painting with nothing at all faulty about it; he is so struck by it that he offers to trade his soul for these looks to last eternally.
