Backstab. Attacking an enemy from their back at close range will lead to a powerful backstab attack. Backstab attacks deal a huge amount of damage, so it’s always worth trying to do. The attack animation lasts for a short while, but you're invincible while in the animation. Most enemies can be backstabbed, usually humanoid type enemies.
Don't forget about guard break either. In Dark Souls there was only backstab and parry - riposte as critical attacks. In Dark Souls II you can backstab, you can parry your opponent (which sits him down on his ass and you can riposte then) AND you can overpower his guard (with either the new attack that replaced kick or by just hitting him with a heavy weapon and having more stamina, both while

Dark Souls is a game that relies entirely on its own internal consistency to teach the player how to play. Lying to you by creating extra exceptions to the rules, especially in the combat, will make you lose trust in the mechanics, which makes it harder for the developers to teach you how to play the game.

From what I've read from various sources, I'm roughly 75% of the way through Dark Souls, but I beat Ninja Gaiden Black on Master Ninja so I know that game pretty well. I'd call Dark Souls about as tough as Gaiden on Master, its all about knowing your opponents, timing with animations, learning weaknesses and being careful not to be overconfident.
Thank you for replying. I'm still concerned about the parrying because I've been trying to do it on the first enemies who had swords and i couldn't parry with the first game shield even once even when parried right in front of being hit.
